"Second Saturday" Birding in Upper Bidwell Park This mild 3 hour mile walk is open to birdwatchers of all levels. Meet at 9:00 a.m. at parking area E Map. Bring binoculars, water, snacks walking shoes and proper clothing for the expected weather conditions. As always, rain cancels. Sponsored by Altacal Audubon Society. Even this early in the new year, some birds will be thinking of spring. We could get nesting Great Horned Owls, Western Bluebird, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Oak Titmouse, lots of Acorn Woodpeckers, White-breasted Nuthatch, and Nuttall’s Woodpecker. After birding Horseshoe Lake and around the parking lot, we will head up the canyon to the Yahi Trail, follow it along Big Chico Creek, as far as time permits (2 -3 mi, round trip). | T U E | 1 | Annual polar bear swim across Lower Bidwell Park's Sycamore Pool Map starting at 1 pm. This is a no-host event--you just show up at the appropriate time. Even if you don't want to brave the chilly waters, this is a fun park event to attend and you're sure to see some of your neighbors and friends! New Year's Day Upper Bidwell Park Banana Belt Hike to view early spring flowers and the last of the fall flowers. Lunch at an Indian rock shelter. Sponsored by the Mount Lassen Chapter of the California Native Plant Society. Meet at 10 am at Parking Area E Map. Bring lunch & water and wear hiking gear. This is about a 2 mile walk. |
