11 3rd Annual Habitat Home Run & Kids Fun Run Starts at One Mile Recreation Area Map at 9:00 am (kid's 1/4 or 3/4 loops, strollers & bikes permitted, parent must be present) and at 9:20 am for 5K walk/run.  Pre-registration fee is $25, $15 for kid's fun run.  See Habitat for Humanity of Butte County for more information.

"Second Saturday" Birding in Upper Bidwell Park  This mild 3 hour mile walk is open to birdwatchers of all levels. Meet at 9:00 a.m. at parking area E Map.  Bring binoculars, water, snacks walking shoes and proper clothing for the expected weather conditions. As always, rain cancels. Sponsored by Altacal Audubon Society. Even this early in the new year, some birds will be thinking of spring. We could get nesting Great Horned Owls, Western Bluebird, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Oak Titmouse, lots of Acorn  Woodpeckers, White-breasted Nuthatch, and Nuttall’s Woodpecker. After birding Horseshoe Lake and around the parking lot, we will head up the canyon to the Yahi Trail, follow it along Big Chico Creek, as far as time permits (2 -3 mi, round trip). We usually turn around at the Day Camp parking lot and choose a different trail and get back to the cars by 12:30pm.  Contact Steve King at 530-566-6136.

15 Bidwell Park and Creeks of Chico annual cleanup.  Help Butte Environmental Council clean up Bidwell Park, Little Chico Creek, Big Chico Creek, Sycamore Creek, Teichert Ponds and Lindo Channel from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm (includes lots of snacks and a free lunch afterwards).  Bring gloves and water and wear closed-toe shoes. Long pants preferable. For the park cleanup (suitable for children), meet at Hooker Oak Park parking lot Map.  For the creeks cleanup, meet at Wakefield & Sons Glass (Park Ave at Humboldt).  Help is especially needed if you have a pickup truck.  For more information, contact BEC. Bidwell Park and Playground Commission meeting in Council Chambers Map starting at 6:30 pm.  See Agendas & Minutes for agenda and background material for agenda items.  The public is invited to attend.

Annual polar bear swim across Lower Bidwell Park's Sycamore Pool Map starting at 1 pm.  This is a no-host event--you just show up at the appropriate time. Even if you don't want to brave the chilly waters, this is a fun park event to attend and you're sure to see some of your neighbors and friends!

New Year's Day Upper Bidwell Park Banana Belt Hike to view early spring flowers and the last of the fall flowers.  Lunch at an Indian rock shelter. Sponsored by the Mount Lassen Chapter of the California Native Plant Society.  Meet at 10 am at Parking Area E Map.  Bring lunch & water and wear hiking gear.  This is about a 2 mile walk.
