27 Run for Food Help provide meals and shelter for Chico's homeless by participating in the 9th annual Thanksgiving Day 5K run/walk in Lower Bidwell Park starting at 9:00 am.  In just a few years, this has grown to be one of the park's largest events. For more information or to -pre-register, see Run for Food.  Sponsored by the Jesus Center.

4 (8:00-11:00 am) Lindo Channel  Volunteer Work session Pick up trash and remove invasive plants from the north side of Lindo Channel at Esplanade. Meet just north of the bike bridge, by the road. If driving, meet at the west end of the Cohasset Lane cul-du-sac by 161 Cohasset Ln. Wear closed-toe shoes and, if possible, bring water. 5 (2:00-4:30 pm) Five Mile Recreation Area Volunteer Session Meet near the bathrooms on the south side of Five Mile Map, off Centennial Ave. Work will include trash pickup, grapevine control, and removal of pokeweed, vinca and other invasives. For more information, call Elaine at (530) 518-1530.

6 (1 to 4 pm) Lost Park Volunteer Work Session Remove invasive plants and pick up trash from this downtown park Map, on the south side of Big Chico Creek. Meet at the parking lot behind  Shalom Free Clinic Thrift Store (250 E. 1st Street). 7 Sacramento River Road Cleanup Monthly volunteer cleanup of roadways near the Sac River from 9 to 11 am followed by an optional lunch at Scotty's Landing.  For more information or to register, see Sacramento River Preservation Trust. No CAVE credit.

(9 am to noon) Comanche Creek Greenway Workday Join community/neighborhood volunteers at the intersection of East Park Ave. and Midway, the eastern boundary of the city-owned Comanche Creek Greenway. Volunteers will remove invasive plants and pick up trash. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes; bring a water container.  Bring work gloves if you have them. Annual Polar Bear Swim across Lower Bidwell Park's Sycamore Pool Map starting at 1 pm.  This is a no-host event--you just show up at the appropriate time. Even if you don't want to brave the chilly waters, this is a fun park event to attend and you're sure to see some of your neighbors and friends!

New Year's Day Upper Bidwell Park Banana Belt Hike to view early spring flowers and the last of the fall flowers.  Lunch at an Indian rock shelter. Sponsored by the Mount Lassen Chapter of the California Native Plant Society.  Meet at 10 am at Parking Area E Map.  Bring lunch & water and wear hiking gear.  This is about a 2 mile walk.

11 11th Annual Frost or Fog Quarter Marathon and 5K Starts at Sycamore Bypass levee near Five Mile Recreation Area Map (starts at 9 am for Marathon, 9:10 am for 5K). About 500 participants, costs $20-25.  Sponsored by Under the Sun.  For registration information, vist Fleet Feet at 241 Main or see Frost or Fog.

19 (9 am to 12:30 pm) Bidwell Park and Creeks of Chico annual cleanup.  Help Butte Environmental Council clean up Bidwell Park, Little Chico Creek, Big Chico Creek, Teichert Ponds and Lindo Channel. Includes snacks and a free lunch afterwards.  Bring gloves and water and wear closed-toe shoes. Long pants preferable. For the park cleanup (suitable for children), meet at Hooker Oak Park parking lot Map.  For the creeks cleanup, meet at 1057 Park Ave (at 11th St). Your help is especially needed if you have a pickup truck.  For more information and to pre-register, contact BEC. Funding for event provided by City of Chico and numerous local businesses.
