Accomplishments

  • Non-profit organization founded in April 2003
  • Our Mission is to protect the natural qualities of Bidwell Park, encourage responsible park use and to educate the public about issues regarding park management
  • Created web site that contains historical documents and reports relating to the Park, a calendar listing all Park volunteer opportunities and whatever Park-related activities we are aware of, Park issues, links to other organizations that work in the Park, and, generally, the only comprehensive source of information about Bidwell Park
  • Organized, publicized and supervised about 800 volunteer work sessions in Bidwell Park so far, providing more than 7,600 hours of free labor to the Park
  • Encouraged City staff and the City Council to fund a full-time Park volunteer coordinator to supplement the work of the Park employees
  • Recruit volunteers for ours and park-sponsored restoration projects
  • Provide a weekly email Bidwell Park newsletter with volunteer opportunities, meetings and events and other information
  • Adopted Annie's Glen as a project and worked there every weekend for a year and a half, picking up litter, removing invasive weeds, and planting and caring for native plants
  • Offered public activities every week during the Bidwell Park Centennial year, including field trips in the park, volunteer work sessions and presentations to organizations about Bidwell Park
  • Created the Park's first comprehensive list of special-status plants and animal species and a complete list of invasive plant species
  • Helped write the Park's vegetation management plan
  • Provide information about the park's invasive plants to the BPPC via presentations at Park Commission meetings
  • Provided training to park maintenance staff in natural resource management topics
  • Connect volunteers from the scientific community with park staff, to provide the science-based knowledge that is lacking within the city staff
  • Gathered and presented information to the Chico City Council that convinced them to provide the final piece of financing to fund the replacement inflatable dam at One Mile, a structure which is safer for park workers, reduces pool maintenance costs and provides environmental benefits to salmon and downstream creek health
  • Initiated discussions with Park staff regarding bicycle/pedestrian connectivity to Annie's Glen and encouraged City staff, the Bicycle Advisory Committee, the Park Commission and the Chico City Council to build the Pine St. underpass and bridge across Big Chico Creek in the Glen
  • Repeatedly contacted the CARD General Manager and Board asking them to provide disc golf opportunities in their facilities, which eventually resulted in the creation of the course at Hooker Oak Park
  • Spent thousands of hours participating in Park-related meetings, ranging from Bidwell Park and Playground Commission and committee meetings, City Council meetings where Park projects were discussed, meetings with Park staff to plan major volunteer events, monthly vegetation management partners meetings, and on-site visits with Park staff to review and develop volunteer projects
  • Provided free CEQA workshop for community residents and City staff
  • Participate in the Endangered Species Faire every year, presented twice at the CSU, Chico This Way to Sustainability Conference, make presentations about the park to any group that requests it
  • Concerned about the management of all 3,670 acres of Bidwell Park
